India and Britain explore ways of co-operation in Health Sector

India and Britain explored here today, ways of strengthening cooperation in Health sector which could not only be mutually beneficial but also for the entire mankind. The possibilities in this sector were discussed by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and the visiting Chief Scientific Officer of the British Department of Health Professor, Sue Hill OBE, at a meeting lasting over an hour. Dr. Ramadoss told her about the new initiatives being taken by India to provide better health care delivery to the people. He specifically told her about the recently launched National Rural Health Mission and its objectives. Matters relating to Stem Cell research, clinical diagnostics, tackling communicable and non-communicable diseases, medical tourism, upgrading of nursing education, policies concerning medical practioners etc. figured during the discussion.

Professor Sue Hill OBE agreed with Dr. Ramadoss that there is vast scope for co-operation between the two sides. She said the two sides can benefit a lot from the experiences of each other. Professor Sue Hill OBE also agreed with Dr. Ramadoss that for tackling certain global health problems, there has to be a synergy for the benefit of mankind. The research should be globalized instead of here and there as it concerns the whole of humankind.

The Visiting Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr. Peter Piot also met Dr. Ramadoss today and discussed with him the global AIDS/HIV scenario in general and situation in India in particular. He told him about the efforts being made in India to tackle the problem with special focus on North-East. Dr. Ramadoss told Dr. Piot that a global partnership has to be evolved for combating AIDS/HIV.
