Increase in budgetary deficit

The fiscal deficit upto September 2006 is Rs. 86,461 crore which is 58.2 per cent of the Budget Estimates of Rs.1,48,686 crore for the year 2006-2007.

It is not correct that the expenses incurred on non-developmental activities is much more than the budgetary estimates. The non-plan expenditure upto September 2006 is Rs. 1,83,065 crore which is 46.8% of the Budget Estimates of Rs. 3,91,263 crore for the year 2006-2007, as against expenditure of 40.9 per cent during the corresponding period in previous year. The increased expenditure relate mainly to interest payment, defence, transfer to State and Union Territory Governments and subsidies.
