Govt. asks Insurance Companies to provide immediate relief to tsunami victims TASK FORCE SET UP TO MONITOR RELIEF MEASURES SPECIAL CELLS IN THE AFFECTED REGIONS

Keeping in view the devastation caused by Tsunami in the States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Ministry of Finance has asked the Insurance Companies for provision of immediate relief to victims/their families in the affected regions. Accordingly, the Life Insurance Corporation has set up special cells in the concerned zones for immediate settlement of claims. Similarly, non life insurance companies e.g., New India Assurance Company, National Insurance Company, United India Insurance Company and Oriental Insurance Company are also making arrangements for urgent help to the affected persons/families. Special cells are being set up in affected regions. Insurance companies are to issue an advertisement giving information to the affected victims to help settlement of the insurance claims.

The Ministry has also advised the Reserve Bank of India for provision of immediate needed relief in the affected areas. The RBI has arranged for immediate meetings of the State Level Bankers’ Committees. Banks have been asked to assess the quantum of damage and the relief required. The RBI has issued standing guidelines to banks for extending relief in areas affected by the calamity.

A Task Force has been set up under the Deputy Governor, RBI, Shri V. Leeladhar, to monitor relief measures. This Task Force will be interacting with the Government of India and the concerned State Governments. It will also monitor progress of relief and rehabilitation.
