Government considers to set up NRI welfare centers abroad

The government is considering to set up three NRI welfare centres in US, Malaysia and Gulf. Inaugurating a private television channel 'PIO TV' for the Indian expatriate community, in New Delhi, the Union Minister for Overseas Affairs Shri Vayalar Ravi stated that launching of the TV channel for Non-Indian Residents (NRIs) and People of Indian Origins (PIOs) is a good initiative. The channel was launched on an Indian Internet Television (IPTV) platform.

On the occasion, the Minister said that the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs is taking several measures for the welfare of NRIs, PIOs and Indian workers abroad. He said that government is planning to set up a university for NRIs and PIOs. Shri Vayalar Ravi also informed that the Ministry is considering to amend the Emigration Act, 1983 to ensure protection and welfare of Indian workers abroad. He added that several other measures for the benefit of Indian workers have been undertaken by the Ministry, which includes streamlining of the emigration process, signing of Memorandum of Understanding with the major labour importing countries.
