Gallantry awards during World Wars

The British Government had given gallantry awards for meritorious services during First and the Second World Wars. As per the available records, with the Army Headquarters, approximately 8,676 gallantry awards were given to Indians in First and Second World Wars and, at present, about Rs. 20 lakhs is being spent annually.

            Ministry has received a proposal for increasing the amount gallantry awards. There is no pre-Independence gallantry award with monetary allowance of Rs. 100 per month.

            This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee in a written reply to Shri Harish Rawat Rajya Sabha today

LAST RITES OF EX-SERVICEMEN BY GOVERNMENT

Indian Army gives following grants to its ex-servicemen:-

·         Platinum or demise grant whichever is earlier is given to the ex-servicemen from the Army Officers Benevolent Fund. The scale of this grant which is based on the length of service of the subscriber member is from Rs. 12,500/- to Rs. 50,000/-.

·         Demise grant of Rs. 3,000/- is given to next of kin of retired Personal Below Officer Rank from Army Central Welfare Fund.

Navy gives an amount of Rs. 10,000/- to the deceased family as death grant from welfare fund. In the case of ex-servicemen of Air Force, funeral allowance @ Rs. 1,000/- is granted.

            In addition to the above, the Army is implementing a scheme to ensure decent last rites to its veterans upto Rs. 2500/- from Regimental funds. The station headquarters will implement the new scheme and disseminate information.
