Flood Mitigation Project Approved

The Planning Commission has accorded investment clearance for “Mitigation of floods in Onattukara region comprising of 12 water sheds in Kerala State” The project is estimated to cost Rs. 248.39 Cr. (at 2010 Price level). The scheme is to be executed as per approved outlays in State Plan and should be completed by March, 2013.

The proposal envisages deepening the clogged canals, streams, thodus and ponds and raising and strengthening of their bunds adjoining of Padasekharams. The thodus (small drain) is also proposed to be supported on the streams side by rubble masonry wall at essential locations. Renovation and replacement of pumps and motor sheds, motorthara has been provided for pumping out the excess flood water from Padasekharams and also pumping in water for irrigation into the Padasekharams. Other infrastructural facilities are such as box/slab/pipe culverts, ramp with kadavu, vented cross bars, foot bridges for movement of tractor etc. 23648 ha of area will be benefited from the project. This would include 5890 ha of paddy area and 40,000 population will also benefit.
