In all, 46558 candidates have been called for on-line counselling from July 7 to July 16, 2004 for 11012 seats, which included 10548 in engineering, 121 in pharmacy and 343 in architecture. Of these, a total of 10084 seats have been allotted in engineering, 335 in pharmacy and 117 in architecture through on-line counselling system leaving 464 seats in engineering, 04 in pharmacy and 08 seats in architecture. So far, almost all the seats in the NITs have been allotted. Majority of the vacant seats are now in the self-financed universities. Many of these are likely to be filled on July 27 and August 03, 2004 when the allotments will be made on the basis of the choices submitted by the candidates for allotment for vacant and drop out seats. The candidates selected in the first phase have been advised to report for admission in the respective institutions upto July 26, 2004. Arrangements have been made for on-line reporting of admission by the participating institutions. The candidates who failed to join by the above date, will forfeit their admissions and the resulting seats will be counted as drop out seats.

Special arrangements have been made for candidates from Assam & North-Eastern States who have been permitted to report for their admission at special counters set up at NIT Silchar and Camp Office at IIT Guwahati. Likewise, the affected candidates from Bihar have been permitted to report for admission at NIT Patna/BIT Mesra. On-campus on-line counseling has been carried out under the direct supervision of the CCB, whose secretariat has set up at Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi. The entire process including fee deposit, verification of documents and submission of choices and allotment of seats is carried out on-line. The information relating to the participating institutions, daily allotment and vacancy positions have been put on the CCB web side, www.ccb.nic.in maintaining total transparency in the counselling system.

Despite flood situation in Bihar and major land slides, disconnecting counselling centre at Silchar, the CCB has managed on-line counselling of the students by providing alternative counselling centre at IIT Guwahati and by allowing the Bihar candidates to reach to any counselling centre. In all, 41 institutions have participated for admission through on-line counselling this year, which includes 18 NITs, 3 IIITs, 14 Deemed Universities, 3 Central Government funded institutes and 2 state universities. The total number of institutions, which will be utilizing the AIEEE ranks for their counselling this year, have gone up to 200, in addition to 41 institutions, which have directly participated in the on-line counselling. The main objective of All India Engineering Entrance Examination is to provide a national test for admission to engineering and technology courses, so that the candidates seeking admission do not have to appear into multiple entrance tests. Further, the on-line counselling facility set up by the CCB at its counselling centres, facilitate admission of the candidates into institutions and branches of their choices without physically going from one institute to another for seeking admission.
