Financial Asistance to Gram Panchayats

for Ministry of Panchayati Raj | Date - 20-03-2008

Rajya Sabha

The Central Government does not directly send financial assistance to Gram Panchayats: funds meant for Panchayati Raj Institutions are routed through State Governments. The previous SGRY has been subsumed in NREGA and under NREGA at least fifty percent of the expenditure is mandatorily required to be allocated to the Panchayat at the village level. NREGA also provides for district panchayats to approve the district shelf of projects. The actual financial powers of the District Panchayats are determined through such regulations and executive roles issued there under. In respect of NREGA at least fifty percent is mandatorily required to be allocated to the panchayat at the village level, and NREGA provides for district panchayats to approve the district shelf of projects.

This information was given by Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, Minister of Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs & Sports and DoNER in the Rajya Sabha today in a written reply to a question by Shri Rudra Narayan Pany.
