Expert Committee on new company law to meet

The first meeting of the Expert Committee to advise the Government on the proposed new Company Law is being held on January 3, 2005. It will be addressed by the Minister of Company Affairs, Shri P.C. Gupta.

The Government has set up the Expert Committee to suggest on the issues arising out of the revision of the Companies’ Act, 1956 to evolve a simplified and compact law to address the changes taking place on the national and international scenario. The Committee’s brief is also to suggest to the Government on how to adopt internationally accepted best practices. Protection of investors’ interests is also one of the terms of reference of the Committee.

The Committee is headed by Dr. J.J.Irani with 12 members drawn from the apex bodies of trade and industry, professional bodies, banks, legal profession and the Government. The Committee would also get the benefit of views of several special invitees from different fields.
