Consultative Committee of Home Ministry discusses Draft National Policy on Criminal Justice System

A meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs was held here today to discuss the issue relating to the Draft National Policy on Criminal Justice. The Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil chaired the meeting. Today’s meeting was in continuation of the meeting of the Consultative Committee held on the same subject on May 4, 2007 and July 10, 2007.

Taking part in the deliberations, the members welcomed the Government’s attempt to draft the National Policy on Criminal Justice. They made certain suggestions during their presentations. These related to issues like admissibility of confessions made to police, control of communal violence, quick disposal of court cases, introduction of the concept of federal crimes, police reforms, victim-orientation to the criminal justice system, etc.

The members present at today’s meeting included S/Shri Debabrata Biswas, Urkho Gwra Brahma, Lalhmingliana, Raj Mohinder Singh, Dr. K. Malaisamy, Mahmood A. Madani and Jai Prakash Agarwal of the Rajya Sabha and S/Shri Mani Kumar Subba, Nikhil Kumar, Madan Lal Sharma, Manoranjan Bhakta, Raghuvir Singh Kaushal, S.D.Mandlik, Mohan Singh and Dhirendra Agrawal and Smt. B.Susheela of the Lok Sabha. The Ministers of State for Home, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal and Shri Manikrao Gavit, Minister of State for Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs, Smt. Suryakanta Patil and the Union Home Secretary, Shri Madhukar Gupta were among those present at the meeting.

The deliberations will continue in the next meeting of the Consultative Committee.
