Coal-blocks in the country

There are a total of 539 coal blocks in the country, 178 in Jharkhand, 84 in Maharashtra, 81 in Chattisgarh, 78 in Madhya Pradesh, 53 in Orissa, 45 in West Bengal and 20 in Andhra Pradesh.

The total estimated coal reserves in the country is 247.85 billion tonnes. Out of these, 92.96 billion tonnes are in proved category, 117.09 billion tonnes in indicated category and 37.80 billion tonnes in inferred category.

The total estimated coal resources in Jharkhand, the largest coal containing state is 72.20 billion tonnes. Out of these, 35.42 billion tonnes are in proved category, 30.44 billion tonnes in indicated category and 6.35 billion tonnes in inferred category.

This information was given by the Minister of state for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
