North Eastern State of Meghalaya is blessed with abundant mineral resources like coal, lime stone, kaolin, felspar, quartz, gypsum and bauxite. The State has a reserve of high grade sub-bituminous coal ,witch contains less ash and its calorific value is higher than coal available in other parts of the country.
Meghalaya coal, popularly known as ‘tertiary coal’ occurs in all the districts of the state. According to the Geological Survey of India the quantum of coal reserves in Meghalaya as on January 2005 is about 460 million tones mt, out of which 118 mt is proved. The Meghalaya Government has estimated a reserve of 640 mt of which Garo hills alone contains 359 mt. Some other prominent coalfields in the state are west Dadenggiri, Siju, Balpakram, Pyndengrei, Langrin, Mawlong-Shella, Laitryngew and Bapung.
