Central Excise seizure of over Rs. 31 crore

Government has made a seizure of over Rs. 30 crore in cash and 15 bricks of foreign marked gold each weighing One Kg approximately valued at Rs. 1 crore in two day raids conducted over 30 premises all over the country on the chewing Tobacco (Khaini) having brand name ‘Hans’. Persons concerned were also arrested.

Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence developed intelligence regarding clandestine removal of Chewing Tobacco (Khaini) having brand name ‘Hans’. A large number of incriminating documents indicating clandestine removal of the chewing tobacco without payment of duty and sale proceeds of this item were also seized.

Pan Masala, Gutka and Chewing Tobacco are considered to be highly evasion prone items. The Directorate has booked a number of cases of clandestine removal of these items during the last one year. These items carry a very high rate of duty and also do not enjoy SSI exemption.
