Banning of Diabetics Drugs

Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) had prohibited Phenformin, an ant diabetic drug, under Drugs and Cosmetics Act for its manufacturing, sale and distribution in the country vide gazette notification GSR 780(E) dated 01.10.03. In case of another ant diabetic drug, rosiglitazone, CDSCO has requested all State Drugs Controllers on 07.10.10 to suspend all the licences granted by them to manufacture for sale and distribution of the drug and its fixed dose combinations with other drugs with immediate effect.

Any drug prohibited under Drugs and Cosmetics Act for manufacturing, sale in the country is not permitted to be circulated in the market. The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 contains stringent penal provisions for manufacture and sale of drugs not conforming to standards prescribed in the Act and the Rules thereunder.

This information was given by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Dinesh Trivedi in written reply to a question raised in Rajya Sabha today.
