LOK SABHA

The Minister for Panchayati Raj Dr. C.P.Joshi today informed Lok Sabha that the supervision over maintenance and audit of accounts of local bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) is the responsibility of the State Governments. State-wise details of the status of maintenance of accounts by PRIs are not maintained by the Central Government.

Replying to a question whether in many of the States, including Kerala, the local bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions are not maintaining proper accounts resulting in financial mismanagement, Dr. Joshi said the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) has been entrusted with the task of providing technical guidance and support to the States for maintenance of accounts of the local bodies and their audit. Support by C&AG also includes assistance in audit standards, audit planning, improved audit methodology and professional training.
