Annual Assessment of Indian Missions Abroad
The Missions are mandated to provide annual assessment reports on all aspects of their work including consular matters, which in turn cover aspects relating to the welfare of the expatriate community in the accredited countries.
All Missions/Posts handle consular issues of Indian nationals on priority. Upon receipt of information about the death of an Indian national, the concerned Mission/Post initiates immediate action to facilitate transportation of dead bodies to India which, inter alia, requires liaison with the employers, and local authorities for getting necessary clearances, arranging the requisite documentation, preparation of the body for transportation and obtaining consent of the family of the deceased for acceptance of the body. In cases where the employers are non-cooperative or the deceased person was an illegal immigrant, financial assistance is also provided by some of our Missions/Posts from contributions made by community associations or the Indian Community Welfare Fund. Matters relating to compensation/terminal dues are also pursued with employers/insurance companies.
This information was given by the Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Vayalar Ravi in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
