Lok Sabha
There is no proposal to allow hunting of certain wild animals by the Government. Though certain steps have been taken by the Government to check the increasing population of certain wild animals in view of complaints of damage to crops by these wild animals especially in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.
The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 already provides for taking appropriate action to address such problems. As per Section 11 of the Act, the State Chief Wildlife Warden or the authorized officer may, if he is satisfied that any wild animal specified in Schedule-II, Schedule-III or Schedule-IV has become dangerous to human life or to property (including standing crops on any land) or is disabled or diseased as to be beyond recovery, by order in writing and stating the reasons therefor, permit any person to hunt such animal or group of animals in a specified area or cause such animal or group of animals in that specified area to be hunted.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment & Forests, Shri S. Regupathy in a written reply to a question by Shri Kuldeep Bishnoi, in the Lok Sabha today.
