All-India Consumer Price Index Numbers for Agricultural and Rural Labourers

As compared to the month of December, 2003, the all-India Consumer Price Index Numbers for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers (Base:1986-87=100) for January, 2004 remained stationary at 332 (Three hundred and thirty two) and 334 (Three hundred and thirty four) points respectively.

The rise/fall in indices varied from State to State. In the case of Agricultural Labourers, 11 States reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 5 points; in 6 States they showed a decrease ranging between 3 to 4 points while in 3 States they remained constant. Meghalaya with 349 points topped the index table whereas Manipur was at the bottom with index at 308 points.

In the case of Rural Labourers, in 11 States indices reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 5 points; in 6 States they showed a decrease ranging between 2 to 4 pointswhile in 3 States they remained constant. Tamil Nadu was at the top of index table with index at 348 points whereas Manipur and Tripura were at the bottom with index at 309 points each.

Uttar Pradesh experienced a sharpest increase of 5 points each for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers mainly due to increase in prices of wheat atta, onion, gur and firewood. On the other hand, Assam and Orissa in case of Agricultural Labourers and Orissa in case of Rural Labourers recorded a maximum decrease of 4 points each mainly due to decrease in prices of rice, fish fresh and vegetable & fruits.

Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL and CPI-RL increased from 3.43% and 3.09% in December, 2003 to 3.75% and 3.73% respectively in January, 2004. Respective rates of inflation during January, 2003 were 3.90% and 3.54%.
