The domestic tourism in the country is seeing phenomenal explosion during the last few years. During 2004 more than 36 crore people traveled various parts of the country other than their native place. Year wise growth of domestic tourism is as follows:

Uttar Pradesh because of Taj and religious places and Andhra Pradesh because of shrines and temples are the most popular States among the domestic tourists followed by Tamil Nadu. Share of UP and Andhra in domestic tourism in 2004 was 24.4% each while Tamil Nadu’s share was 11.5%. Percentage of top 10 states in domestic tourism in 2004 was as follows:
