Question : REFUGEES IN NORTH EAST REGION



(a) whether the Government have made any rehabilitation/settlement scheme for the Reang refugees;

(b) if so, the details of progress achieved with implementation of return of Reang refugees to Mizoram from Tripura;

(c) the number of refugees at present waiting in make shift their camps in Tripura; and

(d) the time by which they are likely to be rehabilitated?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (I.D.SWAMI)

(a)to(d): Central Government has so far provided a sum of Rs.27.25 crores to Government of Tripura for maintenance of Reang refugees. Central Government has also agreed to provide suitable funds to the Government of Mizoram for the resettlemenmt of the Reangs repatriated to Mizoram and to assist the Government of Mizoram through provision of requisite Security Forces to assure the displaced Reangs of their safety.

Government of Tripura have estimated that more than 32000 Reang refugees are currently taking shelter in Tripura. No displaced Reang has formally been repatriated to Mizoram so far.

It is not possible to indicate any definite time frame by which the refugees will be repatriated to Mizoram. The question of their early repatriation is being pursued with the Government of Mizoram.
