(a) whether the Government have received complaints of destruction of crops due to seepage in Sharda river project in Uttar Pradesh; and

(b) if so, the preventive steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) One representation addressed to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh and others including Central Water Commission was received from “Seepage and Dam Construction Kisan Samity” Lakhimpur-Kheri (UP) demanading compensation due to damage of crops and other losses as a result of seepage on both sides of the Link Channel connecting Girija Barrage and Sarda Barrage and the Feeder Channel off taking from Sarda Barrage.

(b) Irrigation being a State subject, planning, funding, execution and maintenance of the irrigation projects including dam/barrages and the canal systems is the primary responsibility of the State Government and is being done out of their own resources as per their own priorities. According to the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh, 17,929 ha. are affected due to seepage in Sharda River Project. The Govt. of Uttar Pradesh have provided lining in the feeder channel from chainage 7.1 km to 99.00 km. and in high reaches and have also improved the drainage system in the canal command to tackle the problem.
