Question : Sgarmala Project

(a) whether the Government proposes to set up a world class transshipment port under Sagarmala Project;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the expenditure estimated to be incurred thereon;
(c) whether the Government also proposes to promote port-led development along the 7500 km long coastline in the country;
(d) if so, the details thereof along with the name of ports identified for the purpose; and
(e) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to improve the port infrastructure facilities in the country?

(a)&(b):Yes, Madam. The details thereof and the estimated expenditure to be incurred has not yet been firmed up.

(c)to(e):Yes, Madam. The Government proposes to promote port-led development along the coastline of our country. The Port Led Development entails integrated development of islands, augmentation of capacity of existing ports and improving their efficiency, creating new and satellite ports, strengthening evacuation infrastructure including rail and road connectivity, promoting coastal and cruise shipping and inland waterways transportation in order to promote economic development. Skill building of coastal communities and strengthening livelihood options including fisheries, aquaculture, and recreational tourism are integral parts of the Sagarmala Project. A National Perspective Plan and planning of Coastal Economic Zones is part of Sagarmala Project.
