Question : DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF PURE DRINKING WATER



(a) whether the Government has conducted any study to assess the demand for pure drinking water in cities /urban areas for present and likely to arise by 2020 or 2030;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State/city-wise;

(c) whether the Government also studied about the percentage availability of pure drinking water in cities/ urban areas;

(d) if so, the details thereof, State/City-wise;and

(e) the measures taken/to be taken by the Government to augment the shortfall to meet the demand?

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT (SHRI SAUGATA ROY)

(a): Yes, Madam.

(b): Ministry of Water Resources has made an assessment of water demand for domestic purposes for the 35 metropolitan cities upto 2021 on the basis of inputs from State Water Resources/Irrigation Departments. The same is enclosed at Annexure-1.

(c) & (d): The study mentioned at (b) above covers both demand and supply side.

(e): Urban Water Supply is a State subject. However, in order to supplement the efforts of State Governments/ Urban Local Bodies in providing adequate water supply facilities in urban areas, Ministry is providing assistance to cities under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), North Eastern Region Urban Development (NERUDP), 10% Lumpsum Provision Scheme for the Benefit of North Eastern Region including Sikkim, Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Satelite Towns around 7 mega cities, 100 MLD Sea Water Reverse Osmosis De-salination Plant at Nemmeli, Chennai.
