Question : Road Map for Ethanol Blending

(a) whether the Government has announced a road map for ethanol blending in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government is aware of the impact of compatibility with ethanol fuels of on-road vehicles which are not developed to run on 20% ethanol blended fuel;
(d) if so, whether it would cause in increased fuel consumption and higher maintenance costs of vehicles; and
(e) whether the Government is taking any steps to address the issue and if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b):A “Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India 2020-25” prepared by an Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of Additional Secretary, NITI Aayog was released on 5th June 2021. This report lays out a detailed road map for ethanol blending in India and also provides guidance to achieve the target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by bringing all stakeholders together i.e. Ethanol producers, Oil Companies, Vehicle manufacturers and Consumers.
(c) to (e):A joint study by Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) Dehradun, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) Pune and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) R&D on E20 as fuel with existing vehicles was undertaken under the aegis of Department of heavy Industry (DHI) and BIS has issued specification for E20 in 2018. As per the study, it was recommended to adopt E20 fuel in the compatible vehicles labeled for the same.
