Question : LOW COST ROTAVIRUS VACCINE



(a) the average rotavirus related deaths reported in the country during each of the last three years and the current year State/ UT-wise;

(b) whether the Government has made an estimation of the annual requirement of the rotavirus vaccine in the country and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to launch locally-made low cost rotavirus vaccine as part of the Government`s Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) and whether approval has been obtained from Drugs Controller General of India in this regard, if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the company which has been given licence to manufacture this vaccine has made the required doses to meet the demand under UIP, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor along with the time by which it is likely to do so;

(e) whether the Government has made any provision to cater to the private health care market demand, if so, the details thereof indicating the likely number of vaccines required in this regard; and

(f) the time by which the rotavirus vaccine is likely to be launched in the UIP as well as in the health care market?

(a): As per the WHO draft estimates of child deaths associated with rotavirus infections (2000-2013), the estimated rotavirus related deaths in the country during last three years are given below:

(b): Yes, Government has made estimation for 100 lakh doses for pilot introduction of rotavirus vaccine in few states under Universal Immunization Programme.

(c): The selection of Rota virus vaccine will be made by Government of India by standard laid down government procurement procedures.

(d): In view of the above, the question does not arise.

(e): The rotavirus vaccine is already being used by private health care providers by procuring through the market.

(f): Government of India has already initiated steps for pilot introduction of rotavirus vaccine under Universal Immunization Programme in few states in the year 2015-16.
