(a) Under Section 4 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological sites and Remains Act, 1958 Central Government can declare any ancient monument or archaeological site as a monument of national importance.The ancient monument would mean any structure, monument, tumulus, cave, rock sculpture, inscription, etc. which is of historical, archaeological or artistic interest and which has been in existence for not less than 100 years.

(b) The two World Heritage sites in Karnataka viz. Group of monuments at Hampi and the Group of temples at Pattadakal are classified as Group `A` monuments.
