Question : Under-construction Sainik Schools

(a) whether the Government had announced in the General Budget 2021 to open 100 new Sainik Schools and if so, the name of places where the said schools have been opened, State/UT-wise;

(b) the number of sanctioned Sainik Schools under construction in the country, year-wise and place-wise;

(c) the norms regarding the requirement of total area of land, building, laboratory etc., fixed for opening such schools and the total capital expenditure as well as estimated running expenditure to be incurred along with the total amount of assistance/grant likely to be provided by the Government in this regard;

(d) the details of Sainik schools sanctioned and operational in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, district-wise;

(e) whether it is proposed to open Sainik schools in Satara and Solapur districts under Madha Parliamentary Constituency and Latur district of Maharashtra as well as Chatra, Latehar or Palamu districts of Jharkhand; and

(f) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

(a) to (f) The Government has approved the initiative of setting up of 100 new Sainik Schools in partnership with NGOs/private schools and States to be set up under the aegis of Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence. Based upon the approval, applications have been invited by Sainik
Schools Society, Ministry of Defence through web portal http://sainikschool.ncog.gov.in from all willing partners. Applications received are subject to short-listing for approval based on meeting of qualifying requirements framed for the purpose and agreeing to the approval by-laws and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the Sainik Schools Society. Government of India will provide an annual support, on Merit-Cum-Means, of up to 50% fee (subject to an upper limit of Rs 40,000/- per student per annum) for up to 50% of class strength (subject to an upper limit of 50 students per class per annum) for the approved school.

The scheme for opening of 100 New Sainik Schools is open to all Private/NGOs/State Govt Schools in all states and union territories. Communication has been sent to government of all States/UTs, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, to sensitize and encourage any willing schools, within their jurisdictions.
