Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF
CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION
(SHRI RAM VILAS PASWAN)

(a) & (b) : No Madam. Hallmarking on Gold jewellery/artifacts is not mandatory as per the BIS Act, 1986 and the rules made thereon.

(c) : Jeweller selling Hallmarked ornaments are required to obtain Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licence. However, the hallmarking is not done by Jewellers themselves. Jewellers get the ornament hallmarked from BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking (A&H) Centres.

Regular assessment of the A&H Centres is carried out, and also samples are randomly drawn from the licensed jewellers to ensure compliance to relevant Standards.
