Question : IMPORT OF TUR DAL



(a) the quantity of Tur Dal proposed to be imported during 2000-2001;

(b) the quantity imported so far during the current year;

(c) whether the Government are aware that the prices of Tur Dal has crashed in Karnataka and the Tur Dal growers are put to great loss; and

(d) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to ban import of Tur Dal in view of surplus Tur Dal production in the country, particularly in Karnataka?

(a) There is no proposal to import Tur Dal on Government account during 2000-2001.

(b) The Government has not imported Tur dal on its own account so far during the current year. However, the import of pulses (including Tur dal) through private trade has been to the tune of 86,357 MTs during the period April-July, 2000 as per the information furnished by DGFT.

(c) As per the report furnished by the State Government of Karnataka, the prices of Tur Dal in the State is maintaining a normal trend.

(d) Do not arise.
