The Department of Posts has revised the Speed Post rates as a market-friendly measure. Under the new revised rates, the ‘local’ Speed Post rates for ‘upto 50 grams’ has been brought down to Rs 12 from Rs 20. Thus, there is a reduction of 40 % in the local Speed Post rates. The revised rate of Rs 12 is a composite rate including service tax and education cess. The new rates come into effect from today. With this revision, Speed Post will be quite competitive in the express industry.
The revision in the rates has also brought some upward increase in the weight slabs above 50 grams. Following is the chart showing the revised rates:

Speed Post services are available at more than 1200 towns across the country. Local Speed Post services will be provided at all these Speed Post Centres and under the service, Speed Post articles meant for the same town will be delivered either on the same day or on the next working day. At the same time, Speed Post articles booked in and destined for Delhi, Ghaziabad, NOIDA, Gurgaon and Faridabad will be treated as ‘local’ for the purposes of Speed Post tariff. Speed Post was launched in the year 1986 and continues to be the market leader, with a monthly traffic exceeding 1.4 crore in March 2007. The revenue from Speed Post during 2006-07 touched Rs 449 crore.
